What Is the Abortion Pill Method?

The abortion pill is also known as a medical abortion. It is FDA-approved for pregnancies up to 10 weeks gestation. This method uses two drugs taken over 24-48 hours to terminate a pregnancy:

  1. Mifepristone: Typically taken in a clinic, this drug blocks the hormone progesterone, essential for maintaining a pregnancy.
  2. Misoprostol: Taken at home, this drug causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Also, note that Florida law prohibits abortion after 6 weeks of pregnancy, except in cases where the mother’s life is at risk.

Is it an Option?

Certain conditions may make the abortion pill potentially risky and pose complications. It would not be an option for you if:

  • Your pregnancy is beyond 10 weeks of gestation.
  • You have an intrauterine device (IUD) in place.
  • You have a suspected ectopic pregnancy, which is a serious and life-threatening condition.
  • You have specific medical conditions, such as bleeding disorders, heart or blood vessel diseases, severe liver, kidney, or lung disease, or an uncontrolled seizure disorder.
  • You take blood thinners or certain steroid medications.
  • You are unable to attend follow-up appointments or lack access to emergency care.
  • You have allergies to the medications used in the abortion pill method.

This is not an exhaustive list, which is why an ultrasound is essential. An ultrasound can determine how far along you are, confirm the pregnancy’s location, and verify its viability.
