When Am I Most Likely to Get Pregnant?

While it may seem like conception can happen at any time, there are times in your cycle when pregnancy is more likely, and understanding this can be helpful if you’re trying to conceive.

Pinpointing when you are ovulating is not always as simple as it seems since your ovulation window can vary from cycle to cycle, especially if you have irregular periods.

Life Options Clinic provides free pregnancy testing and non-diagnostic ultrasounds to confirm how your pregnancy is developing. Our team can also connect you to education and resources to support you throughout your pregnancy.

Understanding When You Are Most Fertile

You are most likely to become pregnant during your fertile window, which includes the five days leading up to ovulation (when the egg is released from the ovary), the day of ovulation itself, and, in some cases, the day after.

Because sperm can survive in the female reproductive tract for up to five days, intercourse during this time increases the chance of conception. Outside of these five days, the chances of getting pregnant are reduced.

Signs You Are Ovulating

Ovulation is not always obvious, but some women may notice changes that occur leading up to ovulation, such as:

  • Increased sensitivity in the breasts
  • Light spotting
  • Increased sex drive
  • Cervical mucus that becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy
  • Mild pelvic cramping on one side
  • A rise in basal body temperature

Why Calendar Tracking Isn’t Always Reliable

In a standard 28-day cycle, ovulation occurs on day 14; however, research has found that only about 30% of women have a fertile window that falls entirely within days 10–17 of their cycle. This means most women ovulate either earlier or later than this range.

Factors such as stress, illness, travel, hormonal changes, certain medications, and conditions like endometriosis can all affect when ovulation occurs. Even women with generally regular cycles may experience occasional variations from month to month.

This means calendar tracking should be used only as an estimate.
