Not every day of your menstrual cycle carries the same chance of pregnancy. The timing of ovulation plays a major role in when conception can occur, which means there are parts of the cycle when pregnancy is less likely than others.
The difficult part is knowing exactly when those days occur.
Ovulation does not always happen on the same day every month, even when your periods usually arrive on schedule. Sperm can also survive inside the reproductive tract for several days, meaning sex that happens before ovulation can still result in pregnancy.
Understanding what happens throughout your cycle can give you a clearer picture of when pregnancy is more or less likely. Life Options Clinic is here to help you find clarity if you think you may be pregnant.
We provide free pregnancy testing and non-diagnostic ultrasounds, and information about your options. Schedule a confidential appointment today.
Pregnancy Is Most Likely Around Ovulation
Ovulation is the point in your cycle when an ovary releases an egg. The egg is available for fertilization for a relatively short time, usually around 12 to 24 hours.
However, the fertile window is longer than just the day you ovulate.
Sperm can survive in the reproductive tract for up to five days when conditions are favorable. If sperm are already present when ovulation occurs, fertilization can take place.
This means the days leading up to ovulation are also important when considering your chances of becoming pregnant. The fertile window generally includes the five days before ovulation, the day of ovulation, and a short period afterward.
You can track ovulation by watching for changes in your cervical mucus, recording your basal body temperature, or using an ovulation predictor kit. Just before ovulation, cervical mucus often becomes clear, slippery, and stretchy, while ovulation tests detect the rise in luteinizing hormone that occurs before ovulation.
So, When Is Pregnancy Less Likely?
Pregnancy is generally less likely when you are outside your fertile window, particularly once ovulation has already occurred, and the egg is no longer available for fertilization.
However, this does not mean that you can identify a completely risk-free point in your cycle.
The timing of ovulation can shift because of changes in your cycle, stress, illness, travel, sleep, hormones, and other factors. You may also have an irregular cycle without realizing that your usual ovulation pattern has changed.
That is why counting backward or assuming that you always ovulate on a particular day can give you a false sense of certainty.
Your Period Does Not Automatically Mean You Can’t Get Pregnant
It is sometimes assumed that having sex during your period cannot result in pregnancy. While the chance may be lower for some women, pregnancy is still possible.
If you have a shorter menstrual cycle or ovulate earlier than expected, sperm from sex during your period could remain in the reproductive tract until an egg is released.
For example, someone who has sex toward the end of their period and then ovulates relatively soon afterward could still have sperm present when ovulation occurs.
Your period can therefore be a less fertile time without being a guaranteed pregnancy-free time.
What If You Think You’re Pregnant?
If you have recently had sex, a late period, or other changes in your cycle, you may be wondering whether you could be pregnant. Rather than trying to determine your answer from your cycle alone, take a pregnancy test.
A positive pregnancy test means hCG has been detected, but there is still more to learn about the pregnancy. A limited ultrasound can provide information about how many weeks along the pregnancy is, where the pregnancy is developing, and whether there are signs that the pregnancy is viable.
Life Options Clinic offers both no-cost pregnancy testing and ultrasounds to help you confirm these important pregnancy details.
Get the Clarity You Need
Trying to work out your chances of pregnancy from dates on a calendar can only tell you so much. Your cycle can change, ovulation can occur earlier or later than expected, and a positive pregnancy test does not answer every question about the pregnancy.
At Life Options Clinic, you can receive free pregnancy services to help you understand what is happening with your pregnancy and give you information to consider as you decide what comes next. We also offer STI testing to protect your reproductive health.
