Considering abortion?

If you’re worried about an unplanned pregnancy, you may be considering abortion.  Before you make a decision, make and appointment at Life Options Clinic to talk with one of our patient advocates about your personal situation.  Abortion is a medical procedure, and like all of them, it has side effects and potential risks. You deserve to know the facts. All services are free and confidential and our goal is to provide you with the information you need to make and informed decision, while providing no-cost medical services.

What Should I Do First?

Confirm your pregnancy before you schedule an abortion. Set up an appointment at Life Options Clinic for free and confidential pregnancy testing and ultrasound.  An ultrasound will let you know if your pregnancy is viable or at risk for a natural miscarriage.

We want to provide the information you need to make a confident decision.F

FEELING PRESSURED?

When you are faced with an unplanned pregnancy, everyone wants to give their opinion about what you should do.  But it is YOUR decision.  No one can force you to have an abortion, even if you are a minor.  Forced abortion is against the law.  The medical staff at Life Options Clinic will lovingly and compassionately provide factual information about all your options.

What do I need to know about abortion?

There are two types of abortion: medical and surgical. Your procedure is determined by how far along you are in your pregnancy.  Before you make any decision, please call Life Options Clinic at 850-983-2730 for an appointment to confirm your pregnancy and how far along you are.  You will receive a free medical-grade pregnancy test and, if medically eligible, a free ultrasound to date and assess the viability of your pregnancy.

Medical Abortion

Medical abortion, like the abortion pill, uses drugs to end a known pregnancy,  involving two different drugs.

The first drug, mifepristone, thins the uterus lining and prevents the pregnancy from staying implanted or growing. The second drug, misoprostol, is taken 24- 48 hours later and causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy.

Only Up To 10 Weeks

The FDA has approved the use of the abortion pill method up to 70 days (10 weeks) past the first day of your last menstrual period. Florida’s abortion law allows for abortion up to 6 weeks.

Knowing how far along you are in your pregnancy is essential for the abortion pill method. You must follow up with the doctor you received the drugs from so they can ensure all the contents of your uterus have been expelled.  Medical abortion may require a surgical procedure if the medical abortion fails or is incomplete.

  • Fever and chills
  • Diarrhea

CAN I REVERSE THE EFFECTS OF THE ABORTION PILL?

If you have taken the first dose of the abortion pill, Mifepristone (Mifeprex or RU-486) and have changed your mind, it may not be too late to reverse the effects of the medication abortion and save your pregnancy. If you have questions, please call one of our nurses at (850) 983-2730.  (During non-business hours, phone the Abortion Pill Reversal Hotline available 24/7:  877.558.0333 or visit the Abortion Pill Rescue Network website:  https://abortionpillreversal.com.)

Surgical Abortion

How far along you are determines the type of surgical abortion procedure you receive. As with a medical abortion, a surgical abortion will end your pregnancy.  As the name implies, it is a surgical procedure that removes the baby from the uterus with special instruments.  There are different types and methods of surgical abortion procedures, depending on how far along you are.  To receive factual information, make an appointment for a free pregnancy test, a possible ultrasound, and a consultation at Life Options Clinic.  850-983-2730.

Side Effects and Risks

  • Damage to your cervix
  • Perforation of the uterus
  • Scar tissue on the uterine wall
  • Infection

Current Abortion Laws In Florida

As of April 2023 these are the current abortion laws in Florida.

  • Abortions in Florida are legal up to six (6) weeks gestation.  This is typically the time in which a heartbeat is detectable.
  • Miscarriage is NOT an elective abortion.  Therefore, women will not be denied medical care for miscarriages.
  • Ectopic pregnancy care is NOT an elective abortion, and an abortion will not resolve that serious medical condition. Therefore, women will not be denied medical care for ectopic pregnancies.
  • The abortion pill must be administered in person by a physician, outlawing the dispensing of the pill through the mail.
  • Exceptions to the law exist in cases of rape, incest, human trafficking, fatal fetal abnormality, or when the pregnant woman’s life is in danger.
  • What does all this mean?  If you have a positive at-home pregnancy test, the next thing to do is schedule a medical-grade pregnancy test and pregnancy confirmation ultrasound. Then, based on the results and the date of the pregnancy, you can explore all your pregnancy options. If you were planning to have an abortion but are not able to because of the laws, you are not alone. We are here to help with the resources and support that you need. Call today to schedule a free pregnancy test and ultrasound or to discuss your options with a registered nurse. We are here for you.
