You would think a positive pregnancy test result is all you need to make a decision about your pregnancy, but it isn’t. Ultrasound is your next step. It will confirm your pregnancy and give you additional information to move forward.

What is ultrasound?

Ultrasound uses the echoes from high-frequency sound waves to produce a picture of the inside of your uterus. Our certified technician first applies a gel-like substance to your abdomen and rubs a wand-like instrument called a transducer through the gel.

From the echoes of the sound waves, an image is formed on a computer monitor. Our technician will highlight what you’re seeing and listen for a viable heartbeat.

Why do I need an ultrasound?

You should learn three essential facts about your pregnancy:

1. Is your pregnancy in the uterus?

An ectopic pregnancy (also called a tubal pregnancy) is a pregnancy that develops in the fallopian tube. As it grows, it can become life-threatening to you. A positive pregnancy test doesn’t reveal whether your pregnancy is ectopic or in the correct location. Only an ultrasound can show the pregnancy’s location, which makes an ultrasound so vital.

2. Is your pregnancy viable?

An ultrasound can identify a fetal heartbeat and determine if your pregnancy is viable (developing). The pregnancy may not be viable if a heartbeat cannot be verified. Since up to 20% of known pregnancies end in miscarriage, that could be the reason why a heartbeat is undetected.

3. How far along are you in your pregnancy?

It’s essential to find out how far along you are in your pregnancy, especially if you are considering abortion. The abortion pill is only approved for use up to 70 days past the first day of your last menstrual period. Are you confident you know how many days you’ve been pregnant?
