Anxiety, grief, depression, and many more side effects of abortion have a way of dramatically weighing you down in life. Maybe you’ve experienced this firsthand after abortion, but many women are unaware of the serious mental health effects of abortion.

You may have read about the physical side effects of an unexpected pregnancy. Your mental health is just as important to protect. You deserve clarity about these side effects, especially if you already struggle with mental health.

Mental Health Effects of Abortion

A study by the National Library of Medicine uncovers prolonged grief reactions after reproductive loss. The study shares that women struggle with the following effects after reproductive loss:

  • Subsequent relationship problems
  • Substance misuse
  • Depression
  • Suicidal ideation
  • PTSD

The percentage of reported issues was more than double (136.9% vs. 63.6%) for those who reported that a year or more had passed since the loss of the pregnancy.

A study published in the British Journal of Psychiatry shows dramatic changes in mental health in women after abortion. The study reviewed medical information from 877,000 women, of which 164,000 had an abortion. Women who had an abortion were 81 percent more likely to experience mental health struggles, including:

  • 34% more likely to develop an anxiety disorder
  • 37% more likely to experience depression
  • 110% more likely to abuse alcohol
  • 155% more likely to commit suicide
  • 220% more likely to abuse marijuana

The study shares that 10% of these issues could be linked to a woman’s abortion.
